Loved the week long literary events at the annual Ubud Writers & Readers Festival last week. The official opening at the Ubud Palace saw a cast of brilliant authors and invited guests but strangely absent from the launch proceedings was Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik, who was set to launch the event, opting rather to open the Colossal Kecak performance at Tanah Lot on the same evening. Organizers and festival director Janet De Neefe were nonplussed as they continued to introduce international guest authors Anita Desai, William Dalrymple, Chriss Kenner and Eric Campbell to the Ubudians and southern Bali crowd such as the Conrad’s Ruth Zukerman, Jill Gocher, artist Ananda, jeweler Jean-Francois, Annbritt Olsson Lucas, Lamak restaurant’s Roland and others.
