What’s the greatest lesson life has taught you?
That you have to be able to read and write – it’s very important. When I was young, not many people could read or write, so I was lucky that I had a chance to learn.

What’s most important?

Unity. Indonesia became independent because we were united.

What are the elements of happiness?

Family - how can you smile if a family member is crying?

What were your dreams as a child?

I just had a simple one: to marry a nice woman and have children. That’s enough for me. I never dreamed of being someone important.

What advice would you give to the younger generation?

It’s okay to be modern and keep up with the times, but your culture is important, too. So don’t throw away what your forefathers have left you.

Are you worried about dying?

At times, yes. But it will come one day.

What do you think will happen to you after you die?

I’ve no idea, but I wish could be reach heaven.

When was the happiest time of your life?

When I married by beautiful wife.

And the worst?

When my father passed away – we needed him with us.

What’s humanity all about?

Survival.

Why are there so many conflicts in the world?

Because we all have different opinions, and everyone thinks their opinion is the right one.

Is a peaceful world an impossible dream?

I think so. Because since the beginning of time, there’s always been fighting and war. (BT/P)
