I Wayan Mandri, 75 and from central Bali, breeds cows for a living

What’s the greatest lesson life has taught you?
To work hard. That’s they only way you can get what you want.

What’s most important?
There are a lot of things that are important in this life.

What advice would you give the younger generations?

Get on with people and don’t fight.

Are you worried about dying?

No, I am not. I’m old, and if my time comes I will go.

When was the happiest time of your life?

When my two sons were born. I was so happy to be a father, and they changed my life for the better.

And the worst?

When I was a child. I didn’t have anything, and my parents couldn’t look after me properly because they had to work hard. It was a hard time – hard to get money – but there was plenty of food, though.

What’s humanity all about?

Tolerance and patience.

Why are there so many conflicts in the world?

Because people make demands on others and that causes problems.

Is a peaceful world impossible?

It’s impossible; there will always be problems. All we can do is try to control them.

Are you disappointed with your life or happy at what’s happened?

I’m happy.

How old do you feel?

Is there anything you still want to do?

Nothing at all.

Is one lifetime enough?

No. I want to be reincarnated. (BT/AS)
