triathlon.gifJIMBARAN ~ Badung Regent A.A. Gede Agung is to start Bali’s first international triathlon on Sunday, the organizers said, as they urged people to come to Jimbaran Bay to witness the spectacle and enjoy a “great party on the beach.”

Numbers of participants was higher than expected, one of the organizers, Jack Daniels of Bali Discovery Tours, told The Bali Times.

“We have 180 triathletes – well over our targeted 150 for the first year, plus a large contingent of 5-kilometer fun runners,” he said.

“We hope to make this annual event and expect the numbers to double in year two,” added Daniels.

Those wishing to witness the event should be at the beach beside the Four Seasons hotel between 7:30am and 2pm.

The triathlon begins with a 1.5-kilometer swim in the picturesque bay, followed by a 40-kilometer bike race to Nusa Dua and back and 10-kilometer run in Jimbaran. The 5-kilometer fun run is through Jimbaran village, at 9am.

Admission to the event area is free of charge, Daniels said, and refreshments, free massages courtesy of leading Bali massage center Jari Menari and music would be available on the beach.

There will be restricted traffic access to the area during the event, but parking and free shuttles will be provided at the quarry site on Jl. Karang Mas.
