Celebrity Chef Ignores Jailed Brother’s Pleas: Lawyer

DENPASAR ~ British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is ignoring pleas for help from his brother who is on trial for drug possession in  Bali, his lawyer said on Thursday.

Ronald Ramsay, 39, is facing up to 10 years in prison for possession of 100 milligrams of heroin he was allegedly found with when arrested here in February.

“I have contacted his family, sent them emails, tried to call them and sent them facsimiles – but up until now, there has been no response whatsoever from the family,” lawyer Erwin Siregar said.

He said his client clearly appeared to need the support of his family in facing the trial.

Ramsay, a container-truck driver in Britain, had been working as a private English teacher while in Bali.

He is also charged with a secondary offence of using heroin, which carries a maximum of four years in prison.

Prosecutors have told the court hearing his case that Ramsay told officials he took heroin to help with an illness, but there was no proof he had any illness that required its use.

Indonesia has traditionally handed down stiff penalties for drug traffickers and users, and has 35 people on death row for narcotics offences.

World-famous chef Gordon Ramsay has starred in several top-rating TV series, including Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen. The Scottish-born chef owns several Michelin-star restaurants. (AFP)
