Pemangku Made Rantig, 60, is a priest from Padang Sambian Tengah Village

What’s the greatest lesson life has taught you?
The Gods are powerful; we are nothing compared them.

What’s most important?

Having a good relationship with the Gods and our surroundings. In Hinduism we believe there are two kinds of relationships: Niskala (with the Gods and spirits around us) and Sekala (humans around us). It’s important for me to have good Niskala and Sekala relationships and I pray and try to make peace with the people around me.

What advice would you give the younger generations?

Look after your health and always pray to the Gods.

Are you worried about dying?

No. When the Gods decide my turn has come, I will go in all happiness. I believe the Gods only give us what is best.

When was the happiest time of your life?

Now – I’ve been a priest for five years, and I find peace and happiness doing this.

And the worst?

When I was in Jakarta. I was young and working as a driver and life was difficult. I hadn’t yet had a calling to become a priest.

What’s humanity all about?

Good communication. When we have a problem, it’s important to communicate and find the solution so our relationships will be better.

Why are there so many conflicts in the world?

Differences among people.

Is a peaceful world impossible?

Yes, it is. There will always be problems in life. It’s our duty to manage those problems and find good solutions so we’re happy.

Are you disappointed with your life or happy at what’s happened?

I am happy. Being close to the Gods makes me feel happy.

How old do you feel?

I feel old, but less than 60 – 55.

Is there anything you still want to do?

Is one lifetime enough?

Yes, it is. It’s better to be united with the Gods than just be reincarnate over and over. Life is painful, and being close to the Gods is happiness.

How has Bali changed since you were a child?

A lot. In my village there are almost no ricefields now. When I was a child, there were many ricefields there.

Is it better or worse?

Has tourism been good for Bali?

It’s been good. Tourism has developed Bali – a lot of buildings and public facilities have been built in Bali because of tourism.

What’s the major difference between the East and West?

I don’t know that much about Western life. I can only say that the difference is in the language. Language is a part of culture, and for me, a different language means many differences between the East and West.

Have you ever doubted your religion?

What makes you so sure of it?

I’m happy to be close to the Gods.
