Government to Form Foreigner-Inspection Team

BADUNG ~ Authorities in Badung regency plan to form a foreigner-watch coordinating team to deal with visa violations, Badung regent AA Gde Agung said on Tuesday.

He said the team would cooperate with the Immigration Office in Denpasar and at the airport in order to carry out registration for foreigners who live in Badung and to deal with visa violations according to the law.

Head of the Denpasar Immigration Office Mangatas Napitupulu said that in Badung there were many foreigners who violated their visa permits and that they could be deported back to their home countries.

“The program will begin as soon as possible and will cooperate with other related institutions,” he said.

The Badung government already has an inspection team in place for registering foreign citizens, but without the authority to deal with violators.

“The Population Office has a team to perform the registration of foreigners in Badung, but they can only check whether the foreigners have their proper permits or not,” said office head I Made Witna, adding that so far in 2007, there were 233 expatriates registered as living in Badung, way below the true number of foreigners living in the regency.

“With the new team being formed, we expect to get a more accurate number of the expatriates living in the regency,” he said.
