US Defense Chief Vows Support for Military Sales to Indonesia

Robert Gates & SBYJAKARTA ~ US Defense Secretary Robert Gates pledged strong US support this week for military sales to Indonesia and its emergence as a democratic regional power with global reach.

Gates singled out military transport planes and maritime systems in his meetings with Indonesian leaders.

But US defense officials said there was also interest in selling more F-16 fighters, helicopters and C-130 aircraft to the country.

At a news conference after meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday, Gates acknowledged that US laws and bureaucratic hurdles have delayed sales of parts for Indonesia’s F-16 fighters and C-130 transport planes.

“We really have problems with the administration of our foreign military sales in an efficient and prompt manner. We are working on this with the State Department to try to simplify the bureaucracy,” he said.

“One of the last things I said to the president in our meeting is that we would work with them to help facilitate whatever procurement or upgrade or refurbishment Indonesia wishes to do.”

At Edge of Solar System, a Search for Giant New Planet

TOKYO ~ Scientists at a Japanese university said on Thursday they believe another planet, up to two-thirds the size of the Earth, was orbiting in the far reaches of the solar system.

The researchers at Kobe University in western Japan said that theoretical calculations using computer simulations led them to conclude it was only a matter of time before the mysterious “Planet X” was found.

“The possibility is high that a yet unknown, planet-class celestial body, measuring 30 percent to 70 percent of the Earth’s mass, exists in the outer edges of the solar system,” Kobe University said in a statement.

Monsoon Intensity Driven by Earth’s Orbit: Study

The monsoon rains that drench tropical and subtropical Asia from June through September vary in duration and intensity in keeping with tiny wobbles in Earth’s orbit as it circles the Sun, according to a study released this week.

These cycles wax and wane every 23,000 years, said the study, based on the breakthrough use of stalagmites from a cave in central-eastern China to measure changes in climate patterns over the last quarter million years.

“The implications are that the present Asian summer monsoon is relatively weak in comparison to a few thousand years ago and that is will stay at this level for centuries more,” lead researcher Hai Cheng of Nanjing Normal University in China’s Jiangsu Province said.
