Lifetimes Masseuse in Canggu

I Nyoman Jambe is 116 years of age and is a masseuse in Banjar Canggu

What’s the greatest lesson life has taught you?

Learning from the past, from my own life. I’ve learned a lot from my jobs. I’ve been a farmer, a fisherwoman and even a soldier during the Japanese colonial period. Now I’m a masseuse.

What’s most important?

To take care of my farm and do any odd jobs I can find.

What advice would you give the younger generations?

I would advise the younger generations to get good jobs. When they have enough money, they should take care of elderly.

Are you worried about dying?

No, I am not worried. I just leave life in God’s hands.

When was the happiest time of your life?

Now is the happiest time of my life because we’re no longer living in the colonial period.

And the worst?

The worst time will be when I die and leave my family.

How is the state of humanity?

I think humanity is in a bad state right now because so many people have gone crazy over money.

Why are there so many conflicts in the world?

Maybe people don’t know how to maintain good relations. Also, lots of conflicts occur over women.

Is a peaceful world possible?

I don’t know, but I always hope with every change in presidential and government offices that the country will continue towards a better future.

Are you disappointed with your life or happy at what’s happened?

I am disappointed because I don’t have a real job. I am also lame and blind. I am a veteran but no one remembers the war.

How old do you feel?

I feel very old but people think I’m young because my hair is still black.

Is there anything you still want to do?

Yes, there’s always something.

Is one lifetime enough?

No, I don’t think one lifetime is enough. I hope to live once again. I want to live another life, in which I am rich, so that I can enjoy it.

How has Bali changed since you were a child?

It has changed a lot. Back in the Sukarno days, life was very good.

Is it better or worse?

It’s worse, because people have sold their ricefields to get rich quick and the environment has been damaged.

Has tourism been good for Bali?

Tourism has been good for creating jobs and wealth in Bali, but tourism has also been bad for the island. It has made Balinese people lazy because they don’t have to work for money. All they have to do is sell land.

Have you ever doubted your religion?

I have never doubted. I have always believed.

What makes you so sure of it?

Because I think all people should believe in their religion.
