Oneday with manager of a printing company

Gusti Ayu Putu Anantari is the manager of a printing company that is owned by her family and located in Denpasar. The 34-year-old mother of two sons lives in Renon and shared her day with The Bali Times

“My work is in a way a devotion to God.”

My day begins at 6am. It takes me two hours to complete my domestic duties, including the time-consuming work of preparing the religious offerings. Very often the offerings are prepared a day early due to time constraints.

I leave for work at 9am. Fortunately the office is located opposite my house so no time is spent commuting.

I am the manager of a printing company that specializes in the design and printing of wedding cards and wedding souvenirs. My job entails quality control and management of the unit, organizing orders and production of the same and scheduling supplies. Adjacent to the unit is the company showroom cum shop that displays and sells our range of products.

My husband, all the employees and me work as a well integrated team. My husband is the creative powerhouse, designing products, while I support him as controller of production processes that converts his designs to saleable products. As we are in the business of wedding cards, the delivery deadline must be met at all costs; there can be no delay in orders. Also, we don’t want customers to complain about our services. Usually it takes two days to complete an order. But during the wedding season, we complete more than one order in a day. This creates a lot more work for me, as I have to arrange film and printing plates and monitor the printing.

My normal workday ends at 7pm. In the wedding season we all have to work late into the night to complete urgent orders and meet the tight deadlines.

When I get home I spend some time reading the newspaper, to update myself on the latest news. This helps me to communicate better with customers. After all, the customer is king and therefore building a long-term relationship through good communication and a reliable and dependable service is of utmost importance.

That’s the reason we keep the shop open for a half day on Sunday. Customers come from Bali, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Semarang and other places.

I graduated with a degree in law from a private university in Denpasar, and afterwards worked in various firms until I settled into my present job. I never thought for a moment that I would end up working in a printing firm – and enjoying it! But I’m an ambitious person. For me, my work is in a way a devotion to God. Therefore I don’t have high aspirations.

During my leisure time I play with my children, and take them wherever they want to go, because on workdays I don’t have much time to spare. On workdays when I am busy and cannot spend much time with the kids, I get help from the family.

As a manager, I try not to overreact to any adverse conditions that may arise. I remind myself that I should not be distracted, as it might affect my work. I’m an optimist at all times. I think this attitude is essential to make a success of your business.
