Gianyar Sees Rise in Exports of Handicrafts

GIANYAR ~ From monthly data in the Gianyar Industry, Commercial and Cooperation Office, a significant improvement can be seen in the number of exports of handicrafts produced by artisans in this area.

Income from export activities keeps increasing every month and is significantly higher now than it was this time last year. Total national income from the period of January to April 2008 totaled more than US$11.5 million, the data show.

This shows that world economy, especially in the US and Europe, which are the biggest contributors of income to Indonesia, is getting better, said one official.

“Almost every exporter tries to obtain American market opportunities, since the chance to market products in the US generally means the highest incomes,” said office chief A.A. Gde Agung Suardhana.

He said of all the products produced in Gianyar, wood-based items brought in the largest income.

On average 20,000 pieces of wooden statues, furniture and other wooden handicrafts are exported from Gianyar every month.

Besides US and Europe markets, hand-crafted products from Gianyar are also exported to Africa, which is potentially a huge market due to the rapid economic development on the continent, said officials.
