From the perspective of I Ketut Sukrawan, 33, owner of Kup’s Corner Bar on Jl. Benesari in Kuta
What are we here for?
To be happy and make other people happy.
Do you believe in the Big Bang theory that the now circa-13.7-billion-yar-old universe and all that’s in it was created by a massive explosion of enormously dense matter at what may have been the beginning of time?
Yes, I do.
If there is a God, where is He?
Somewhere in your mind. In ourselves.
Is there a mystery to life?
Yes, I think so; but it’s a mystery.
Do you think we are alone in the universe?
I think there is life elsewhere.
There is a theory that there may be parallel universes with exact copies of us — doppelgangers — doing exactly the same thing as us right now. What do you think about that?
I’m not sure about that. There might be the same person somewhere but maybe not doing the same thing. Hindus believe ari-ari (your placenta) is the other half of a person but doesn’t have a human form. Your ari-ari will watch over you throughout your life. I think that is a bit like a doppelganger.
What do you think happens when people die?
I think they go somewhere to wait to start their next life.
Where is your soul and what is it?
My soul is in every part of me. It’s guiding everything I say, think and do.
Science says that all matter and energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Therefore, will our energy, in the form of our soul, live on for infinity?
Yes, I do believe that we are in a cycle, taking different forms made from matter and energy that is being recycled constantly.
Do we have any control over our lives or has everything already been mapped out since birth, predetermined, and fate?
We can control our lives but we’re limited as to what we can control. If something is supposed to happen, there is nothing we can do about it.
Some people believe that because we are made from the same matter as the universe – carbon, and other elements, like nitrogen – anything we ask it will be attracted to us, popularized recently in the movie The Secret. What’s your view?
I don’t know much about The Secret, but it sounds like karma.
Are we being observed?
Yes, we are.
If there is a God, why does he allow such colossal suffering of people on Earth, either through war, disease or natural disasters?
It’s all about karma.
