President Announces $100m Infrastructure Projects for Bali

sby.jpgDENPASAR ~ During a visit to Bali at the weekend, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono announced seven projects aimed at improving the infrastructure of Bali and worth US$100 million.

Six of the seven will be Bali Public Works Department projects, including beach protection projects in Nusa Dua, Sanur and Padanggalak, the construction and improvement of sustainable irrigation networks in Buleleng and Karangasem and the Denpasar Sewerage Development Project (DSDP).

Bali’s government will be dealing with the construction of a Sports Arena.

In a speech, the president said that improvement of infrastructure was good for national economic competitiveness, pushing other parts of the country to make improvements.

He added that the developments would also have a positive effect on the unemployment rate in Bali.

“The beach protection projects, for example, are not only to hold back abrasion, but also to secure economic stability in communities nearby,” said the President.

Bali Governor Dewa Made Beratha said the total budget for the seven projects was Rp937 billion ($$100 million), taken from the national and regional budgets as well as a loan from Japan.

Beratha explained, that the DSDP, which will cost Rp512.9 billion ($55 million), was a breakthrough project to improve Bali’s natural environment.

The construction of the sewerage system aimed to increase the quality of Bali’s waterworks by processing waste-water more effectively, he said.
