From the perspective of Wirata, 25, a waiter from Bali

What are we here for?
To have a wife, children and to work for them. Having good work is really important to me.

Do you believe in the Big Bang theory that the now circa-13.7-billion-year-old universe and all that’s in it was created by a massive explosion of enormously dense matter at what may have been the beginning of time?
Yes, I believe it’s true, because I think God created the planets, the sun and everything. So he could also create what we call the big bang. This is between science and religion.

If there is a god, where is this entity?
He is in my heart, because if I do something good for someone, it also comes from the heart. Indonesia is full of religions, like Hindus, Muslims, Christians. But here, people believe God is in their heart.

Is there a mystery to life?
No, because life is natural for human beings, so why should it be a mystery?

Do you think we are alone in the universe?
Of course not. I don’t know the whole universe, so I can only talk for Earth, but the Earth is full of people, so you are never alone.

There is a theory that there may be parallel universes with exact copies of us – doppelgangers – doing exactly the same thing as us right now. What do you think about that?
I don’t think that’s true.

What do you think happens to people when they die?
In my religion, we have a ceremony – a cremation – so that the dead will go to heaven.

Where is your soul, and what is it?
The soul is sacred, because it comes from God. But I don’t really know where it is – maybe in my body.

Science says that all matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Therefore, will our energy, in the form of our soul, live on for infinity?
Yes, because it also goes to heaven.

Do you know your place in the universe?
My place is in Bali, working every day like a routine. I want to stay in Bali, but maybe if I have money, I will go abroad. Still, at the end, I will come back to Bali for sure.

Some people believe that because we are made of the same matter as the universe -carbon, and other elements, like nitrogen – anything we ask it will be attracted to us, popularized recently in the movie The Secret. What’s your view?
I believe it’s possible. But that’s because I also believe in magic.

Are we being observed?
Yes, there is something watching us, like gods or angels. But I’ve never seen them; I just believe in them.

If there is a god, why does he allow such colossal suffering of people on Earth, either through war, disease or natural disasters?
Maybe God allows it because people don’t pray enough, and don’t trust enough. He does it to punish people, to make them respect Him.
