From the perspective of Bokir, 25, manager of a motorbike-rental shop in Kuta

What are we here for?
To achieve our destiny: being happy, having a wife and children and getting money.

Do you believe in the Bing Bang theory that the now circa-13.7-billion-year-old universe and all that’s in it was created by a massive explosion of enormously dense matter at what may have been the beginning of time?
No, I think that’s wrong, because I believe God created the planets and the universe.

If there is a god, where is he?
He is in the sky, and everywhere, in everything.

Is there a mystery to life?
Of course there is. Sometimes you cannot really see the truth, or what is going to happen later. For example, people pray, and things happen. This is the mystery.

Do you think we are alone in the universe?
No, I think there are people on other planets, such as Mars, for example. At least maybe other kinds of life.

There is a theory that there may be parallel universes with exact copies of us – doppelgangers – doing exactly the same thing as us right now. What do you think about that?
I don’t agree with that because if some different universes exist, they should be different from ours.

What do you think happens when people die?
They go to paradise.

Where is your soul, and what is it?
My soul is in my body, but I cannot see it, so I don’t know exactly what it is.

Science says that all matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed. Therefore, will our energy, in the form of our soul, live on for infinity?
My soul will live forever, because I will have children, and my children will have children, so my energy, in the form of my soul, will never disappear.

Do you know your place in the universe?
No, I don’t know. This is God knowledge’s.

Some people believe that because we are made of the same matter as the universe – carbon, and other elements, like nitrogen – anything we ask it will be attracted to us, popularized recently in the movie The Secret. What’s your view?
I think it’s true, and sometimes it works, but sometimes I dream of getting a lot of money and I don’t always get it.

Are we being observed?
Yes, God is always observing us, watching us.

If there is a god, why does he allow such colossal suffering of people on earth, either through war, disease or natural disasters?
Because of karma. God gives humans a chance to behave the right way, and if they don’t, their destiny, or their next life, will be painful. That is why God allows wars and human crimes; He gives humans responsibilities. As for natural disasters, I think God just wants people to remember that He is there.
