From the perspective of Wayan Ariandika, 24, owner of the Indian King Tandoori restaurant on Jl. Benesari in Kuta
What are we here for?
To realize our dreams, make them come true, enjoy new experiences all the time, do our best and try to see how nice the world we live in is.
Do you believe in the Bing Bang theory that the now circa-13.7-billion-year- old universe and all that’s in it was created by a massive explosion of enormously dense matter at what may have been the beginning of time?
Of course I believe it. It’s the only real explanation.
If there is a god, where is this entity?
I believe in God, but I don’t know where he is – probably everywhere – and He decides what is going to happen to me as soon as I pray.
Is there a mystery to life?
There is, because you never know what is going to happen next. Today I am alive; maybe tomorrow I will be dead. We never know about the future, and that’s the mystery.
There is a theory that there may be parallel universes with exact copies of us – doppelgangers – doing exactly the same thing as us right now. What do you think about that?
I think it’s false, because even if parallel universes existed, the people there would be different, with different characters, doing different things.
What do you think happens when people die?
People are reincarnated, and that’s the reason we have to try and do all the best we can to other people. If you lived a bad life, you will maybe be reincarnated in a bad way, and your next life won’t be so nice.
Where is your soul, and what is it?
My body is my soul, and my soul is in my body.
Science says that all matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed. Therefore, will our energy, in the form of our soul, live on for infinity?
When I die, I think my soul will die as well, as it is part of my body.
Do you know your place in the universe?
I know. It is in Singaraja, where I was born.
Some people believe that because we are made of the same matter as the universe – carbon, and other elements, like nitrogen – anything we ask it will be attracted to us, popularized recently in the movie The Secret. What’s your view?
I don’t think that can work, because it is never easy to obtain what you want, and it shouldn’t be easy anyway, or then it would become boring.
Are we being observed?
Yes. I think god is watching us, and He can watch us all as he is omnipotent.
If there is a god, why does he allow such colossal suffering of people on Earth, either through war, disease or natural disasters?
God allows it because He is angry and wants to punish people, to give them a lesson. I trust God, so I think He always has a good reason to do so.
