Bali Bombers Are Executed

CILACAP ~ Three terrorists responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings that claimed the lives of 202 people were put to death at midnight on Saturday, the Attorney General’s Office said.

The trio - Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra – were taken to a hillside clearing at Nusakambangan island prison off the southern coast of Central Java where a firing squad was waiting to carry out the sentence, spokesman Jasman Panjaitan said.

The men had been isolated from other prisoners in the maximum-security facility as preparations for their execution were finalized.

Recent media interviews with the death-row inmates showed the men remained unrepentant of their crimes.

The bodies of the men were due to be flown to their Java hometowns by helicopter later in the day, in accordance with Muslim tradition that the deceased must be buried as soon as possible after death.

Indonesian Police, along with Australian and other counterparts, rounded up dozens of other suspects following the 2002 blasts, all of whom were found guilty in court and sentenced to lengthy jail terms.

Security across the country, particularly in Bali, was heightened this week over fears of possible recriminatory attacks.
