Eight Dead in Eastern Boat Accident

KUPANG ~ Eight people died when a tourist boat sank in rough seas in eastern Indonesia, police said on Monday.

The wooden boat carrying 19 passengers capsized in strong winds and big waves off the islands of East Nusa Tenggara province on Sunday, said district police chief Marsudi Wahyono.

Captain Jeri Manlea, who survived, said the accident happened when passengers forced him to turn around and head back to land.

“The passengers panicked and forced me to head back to Kupang, but I failed to control the boat and it capsized,” he said.

Three people were still listed as missing.
