Students Unearth New, Natural Products

DENPASAR ~ Three pairs of students from high school SMAN 1 Mengwi, Badung, were guaranteed places at Udayana University after presenting research into new uses for currently unused natural resources, an official said.

Headmaster of the school Dr. Ketut Sukanatha said the students were the winners of a competition run within the school to encourage research into natural resources.

Sukanatha said the first pair of winners, Putu Erma Budi Astuti and Putu Sukmawati, discovered the heart of banana trees could be used as a preservative for meat.

The second pair, Luh Putu Risna Dewi and Kadek Diah Parwati, produced a healthy, high-fiber snack from the skin of bananas, which is generally thrown away.

The third, Pande Putu Suarnata Sanjaya and Ni Putu Devie Pranata Riandika, created a perfume out of the oil from the Tanjung flower.

“We know the flowers smell good, so why haven’t we used them before?” head of students science group (KIR) Bagus Ngurah Alit Putra Wiryawan said.

KIR teacher Made Sena Yudana, said students were extremely enthusiastic about the research as not long ago students from the school had won first and second place at a national KIR competition.

Yudana said their one laboratory was not enough for the amount of students interested in taking part in KIR programs, so a second lab had been promised by the government of Badung.
