Police Destroy 2.3 Tons of Arak
GIANYAR ~ Gianyar Police invited students to witness the destruction of 2.3 tons of illegal rice alcohol (arak) seized over the past months in the regency, police said.
Gianyar Police spokesman I Gede Sujana said arak from a total of 48 sellers and suppliers seized since last July was destroyed on Wednesday.
Sujana said students from schools nearby the police office were invited to watch to show them that the consumption of alcohol was not good practice for the health and safety of the community.
Head of the Narcotics Department I Nengah Sumadi was also there to counsel the students.
Sumadi said the consumption and sale of arak was widespread in Bali and could be found in every village on the island.
He said the negative effects of arak could be seen in rising violence and drunk-driving cases.
Police would continue to seize arak in the regency to prevent violence during upcoming legislative campaigns, he added.Filed under: Headlines
