From the perspective of Wayan Jun, 30, an internet café employee from Amed

What are we here for?
To continue on culture and traditions, especially here in Bali.

Do you believe in the Big Bang theory that the circa-13.7-billion-year-old universe and all that’s in it was created by a massive explosion of enormously dense matter at what may have been the beginning of time?
I don’t believe the making of the universe was a problem for God, so we don’t have to look elsewhere for the creator.

If there is a God, where is he?

We can’t see him, but he is everywhere. He is in my heart.

Is there a mystery to life?
I don’t know yet; only God knows that.

Do you think we’re alone in the universe?
Yes. I don’t believe in aliens or any of that.

There’s a theory that there may be parallel universes with exact copies of us – doppelgangers – doing exactly the same thing as us right now. What do you think about that?

I don’t believe that either.

What do you think happens to people when they die?
If they have good karma, they go to a higher place to wait to be reincarnated. If their karma is bad, they will either not be reincarnated or will come back as something low and dirty.

Where is your soul and what is it?
My soul is in my heart. It makes me believe in the things I need to believe in to live.

Science says that all matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Therefore, will our energy, in the form of our soul, live on for infinity?

Yes. Our souls will be reincarnated over and over again. If we were good in our past lives, we are reincarnated quickly.

Do you know your place in the universe?

Right now my place is here in Ubud, working, but in the future I have no idea. I hope my place will be as a husband and father.

Some people believe that because we are made of the same matter as the universe – carbon, and other elements, like nitrogen – anything we ask it will be attracted to us, popularized recently in the movie The Secret. What’s your view?
Although we have to work for the things we need, we must also be positive – so yes, I partly believe that.

Are we being observed?
We are observed by family, our community and also every day by God.

If there is a God, why does he allow such colossal suffering of people on Earth, either through war, disease or natural disasters?
That’s a very hard question. People abuse the things that God gives them – for example, they drive too fast and crash their motorbikes or use black magic. I think it’s what humans do that God can’t stop that causes suffering.
