How do you think the country is doing now?
It’s more stable, safer and corruption is being reduced.
Is the central government in Jakarta doing enough for the regions?
Not enough, but the government has made progress in comparison to previous governments.
If you were running the country, what three things would you fix or change immediately?
Security, economy and education.
What do you think about Bali’s government?
The government of Bali is not doing enough in terms of security. There are still lots of thefts, beggars, etc.
Are you worried about outbreaks of rabies and bird flu that have affected some areas of Bali?
I am really worried. I think we need to anticipate it so it won’t spread out to other areas in Bali and it requires lots of government attention.
Indonesia is made up of more than 17,500 islands, many religions, dozens of ethnic groups and hundred of dialects. Therefore, is it reasonable to expect “Unity in Diversity,” as the founding fathers declared?
It’s very reasonable. We are diverse but we need to unite.
What are the qualities of an Indonesian?
We are very tolerant and welcoming of foreigners.
What for you has been Indonesia’s greatest moment since it declared independence in 1945?
The transition between Sukarno and Suharto.
