Australian Arrested over Drugs

KUTA ~ An Australian man has been arrested in Kuta for allegedly being in possession of drugs, police said on Thursday.

The 33-year-old was arrested outside a bar in the early hours of Monday morning allegedly carrying about five grams of hashish, police said.

Police say they intend to charge the man – who they have named only as JSM, believed to be his initials – with drug possession, which could see him jailed for up to 10 years.

“The intention of the suspect, JSM, was to have the hashish for his own use,” Bali Police Drug Squad Colonel Kokot Indarto said.

“The defendant did not have the chance to use it.”

It is believed the suspsect flew into Bali from Darwin last week.

Police say the man was given the drugs by an Indonesian woman named Lili on Sunday.

“According to him, he’s going to marry her,” Indarto said.

Police found the drugs in the man’s shorts pocket when they searched him outside Crusoes Bar, on one of Kuta’s main tourist strips, at about 2am local time on Monday.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the Consulate-General in Bali was providing assistance to the man.

“Consular staff in Canberra are providing assistance to the man’s family,” she said.

A string of Australians are serving prison terms, including life, in Bali for drugs offenses, some of them on death row.
