Pastika Thanks Gusmao over Dili Temple
RENON ~ Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika expressed gratitude to visiting former East Timor president Xanana Gusmao for a Hindu temple that still stands in the country’s capital, Dili.
Pastika said at Bali’s parliament last Saturday that because of Gusmao – now East Timor’s prime minister – the temple was saved from demolition.
Pastika, Bali’s former police chief and who served time in East Timor, said he had thought the biggest temple in Dili would be knocked down following an exodus of Balinese Hindus after the 1999 referendum that resulted in the territory breaking away from Indonesia, but Gusmao had not wanted that.
“I have many memories of the temple and I would like to pray there again someday,” Pastika said.Filed under: The Island
