From the perspective of Made Nilakandi, 27, a clothing-store manager from Sukawati

What are we here for?

To work and later to have children and support our families.

Do you believe in the Big Bang theory that the circa-13.7-billion-year-old universe and all that’s in it was created by a massive explosion of enormously dense matter at what may have been the beginning of time?

No. I believe God created our world.

If there is a God, where is this entity?
He is everywhere.

Is there a mystery to life?
I’m sure there is, but I don’t really know what it is yet.

Do you think we’re alone in the universe?
Yes. I don’t think there is anything else out there, only humans living on Earth.

There is a theory that there may be parallel universes with exact copies of us – doppelgangers – doing exactly the same thing as us right now. What do you think about that?
I don’t believe in that either.

What do you think happens to people when they die?

You are in limbo until you’re cremated and then you will be reincarnated. In limbo you either stay in heaven or hell, depending on your karma.

Where is your soul and what is it?
My soul is my connection to God. When I die my body will go back to the earth and my soul will go to God.

Science says that all matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Therefore, will our energy, in the form of our soul, live on for infinity?
Yes – that’s the theory of reincarnation.

Do you know your place in the universe?
Right here, right now.

Are we being observed?
Yes. God watches to count up our good and bad karma. He knows everything.

If there is a God, why does he allow such colossal suffering of people on Earth, either through war, disease or natural disasters?
I can’t answer that. Only God can answer that question.
