Singaporean Drowns at Seminyak Beach
SEMINYAK ~ A 39-year-old Singaporean man drowned while swimming at Seminyak Beach on Sunday, police said.
Bali Police spokesman Budi Sugianyar said Douglas Lee got into difficulties while swimming with two friends at Seminyak Beach in Kuta and was rescued by lifeguards.
He was taken to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar around 5pm, where he died shortly thereafter. The cause of death was listed as drowning. The friends survived.
“He was swimming in a dangerous area, where there were red flags up warning of strong currents and no swimming was allowed,” Sugianyar told The Bali Times on Tuesday.
He said Lee, a businessman involved in a solar-energy enterprise and father of a 2-year-old boy with his wife of four years, was also overcome by strong waves.
Lee’s body was flown to Singapore on Tuesday.
Seminyak Beach is one of Bali’s most popular and is thronged by families – tourists and Bali expatriates – at the weekend. It is also a popular surfing area. However, there are regular fatalities in the waters off the beach due to strong riptides and currents.Filed under: The Island
