Govt Sending Medics to Haiti
JAKARTA ~ The central government pledged on Thursday to send a 75-strong medical and rescue team to Haiti, where an earthquake may have killed more than 100,000 people.
“We have prepared about 75 personnel, who consist mostly of paramedics and rescuers,” Disaster Management Agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono said.
“We want to send them as soon as possible, probably on Friday.”
Indonesia is well versed in quake relief and sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity.
A 7.6-magnitude quake that struck Sumatra on September 30 last year killed more than 1,000 people.
