How do you think the country is doing now?
There is a lot of corruption and the judicial system is not balanced. Someone who steals a chicken is put into prison for five years while someone who is corrupt and steals millions from the country might have a lighter sentence. It’s unfair.

Is the central government in Jakarta doing enough for the regions?
The central government cares more about Jakarta than other areas of Indonesia. There’s a big gap between the rich and the poor.

If you were running the country, what three things would you fix or change immediately?
I would put an end to corruption. I would also make society more equal as there shouldn’t be such a big difference between the rich and the poor. The third thing I would change is the health system. Why doesn’t the government help like Western governments do?

What do you think about Bali’s government?
The goodwill of the government depends on the head of each of the regencies.

Are you worried about the outbreak of rabies that has affected some areas of Bali?
Yes, I am worried.

Indonesia is made up of more than 17,500 islands, many religions, dozens of ethnic groups and hundreds of dialects. Therefore, is it reasonable to expect “Unity in Diversity,” as the founding fathers declared?

Of course.

What are the qualities of an Indonesian?
I can’t generalise as there are many differences between Indonesians. I can say that the Balinese are honest, open and friendly.

What for you has been Indonesia’s greatest moment since it declared independence in 1945?
When Sukarno became Indonesia’s president.
