A65-year-old Dutch resident of Legian is under arrest in Karangasem after being reported for having sex with a 16-year-old girl whose parents filed a complaint with police.
If convicted of the offence he could face at least 15 years’ jail.
Karangasem police named the man as Willem Johan Stegenus, a 15-year resident of Bali who lives at Legian. Police chief I Gede Mustika confirmed this week the man had been named a suspect based on reports filed by the girl’s parents.
According to the report, Stegenus took the girl, a cleaner at his Legian house, to Padang Bai where they had sex together several times over two nights.
Police said the report they were investigating claimed Stegenus asked the girl to work in Padang Bai but when they got there he had sex with her.
Police have reported the incident to the Dutch honorary consulate in Bali.
Stegenus, who has been living in Bali for 15 years, may face charges under child protection laws and sexual molestation laws, which carry a minimum jail term of 15 years.
