Volcano No-Shows May Hit Hotel Income

April 20, 2010

DENPASAR
The Bali Times

Another side of the Icelandic volcano story emerged on Tuesday, with Bali hotels saying they were facing rising numbers of delayed guests from Europe and cancellations.

Bali secretary of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Perry Markus  said: “There are actually two opposing sides from the impact of the European air transportation.”

Markus said one side of the coin was that guests already in Bali might choose to extend their stays, but the other was guests with forward bookings might not be able to make the trip.

“But on the other hand, the number of those who delay or cancel their plans to visit here in not small.”

If the current conditions persisted, a larger number of delays would turn into cancellations, which would mean greater losses than benefits for the tourism industry.
