Java, Sulawesi Rocked by Quakes

Mid-sized earthquakes jolted parts of Java and Sulawesi early on Wednesday, the state seismology agency said, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck 122 kilometres west of the of West Java town of Tasikmalaya at 2:13am, the Meteorology and Geophysics agency said.

It was recorded as occurring at a depth of 15 kilometres below the Earth’s surface.

At 3:48am, a same-size magnitude temblor hit 139 kilometres southeast of Melonguane in North Sulawesi, at a depth of 50 kilometres.

Tsunami alerts for both regions were not issued.
