From the perspective of I Made Surya Candra, 26, a chef from Denpasar.

What are we here for?
We’re here as part of the universe and to balance the ecosystem.

Do you believe in the Big Bang theory that the circa-13.7-billion-year-old universe and all that’s in it was created by a massive explosion of enormously dense matter at what may have been the beginning of time?
Yes, I do. Because that’s what makes more sense for me at the moment.

If there is a God, where is he?
I think God is our mind. God teaches us to create harmony in life.

Is there a mystery to life?
The power of our mind. How we can have feelings and how we can express them. I’ve been thinking lately about how the psychics work. I think humans are a mystery themselves.

Do you think we’re alone in the universe?
No. I believe there’s another version of the world. We are not the only one.

There is a theory that there may be parallel universes with exact copies of us – doppelgangers – doing exactly the same thing as us right now. What do you think about that?
There are so many stars in this universe and it makes me think there could be another planet like ours in another universe.

What do you think happens to people when they die?
When we die, we will be buried and that’s it. But the memory of us will be left behind and we will always be part of the universe. We will decay into the tiniest particles and will remain on this earth forever.

Where is your soul and what is it?
The soul is our mind. It’s our imagination.

Science says that all matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Therefore, will our energy, in the form of our soul, live on for infinity?
It will stay in the way of a memory of us.

Do you know your place in the universe?
I am here to live and enjoy my life without forgetting to keep up the existing harmony.

Some people believe that because we are made of the same matter as the universe – carbon, and other elements, like nitrogen – anything we ask it will be attracted to us, popularised recently in the movie The Secret. What’s your view?
As long as you really believe and try hard to get what you want, you will get it eventually.

Are we being observed?
Yes. I believe there are aliens. They could be observing us.

If there is a God, why does he allow such colossal suffering of people on Earth, either through war, disease or natural disasters?
I don’t think it has anything to do with God. Wars are just human creations. Diseases and disasters are natural phenomena.
