Three Terror Suspects Arrested in Java

Three terror suspects were arrested in a police raid in Central Java on Thursday, police said, a day after five men were shot dead in the latest anti-terror operations on the island.

“Since last night, we have arrested three terror suspects in Central Java. They didn’t retaliate and gave themselves up,” national police spokesman Zainuri Lubis told a press conference.

“Besides the three arrested, we have also confiscated several firearms and ammunition,” he added.

The raid took place on Thursday morning on a suspected a militant hideout in Sukoharjo district in Central Java, according to local media.

The arrests were the latest in a series of anti-terror operations nationwide since the discovery of a terrorist training facility in a remote region of Aceh province in February.

More than 100 heavily armed police took part in the raid in a forested part of Aceh Besar, where some 50 militants were said to be conducting military-style training, including the use of firearms.

Five terror suspects were killed in two separate raids in Jakarta and West Java on Wednesday, including Saptono, who was involved in a suicide car bomb attack which killed 10 people outside the Australian embassy in 2004, police had said.
