Dewa Ruci Set to Move to New Home

KUTA

The Dewa Ruci monument at Simpang Siur – the roundabout inter-section in Kuta where Sunset Road links to the Ngurah Rai Bypass – will soon be on the move, according to Governor I Made Mangku Pastika.

It must go to acco-mmodate the new flyover at the intersection planned to ease traffic congestion. Moving the statue will mean the new road can have a straighter alignment and will also reduce costs from resuming commercial property.

“I do not think that there is a problem about moving this statue,” the governor said last weekend. “This monument is not a shrine or a holy place, but it does depict the epic story con-taining a lot of Hindu symbolism from the Maha-bharata (story).”

He said one solution would be to move the statue to a new park area to the north. Another would be to put it behind the computer-operated information screen on the Kuta side of the existing roundabout.

Highway work has already begun at the other end of the project upgrade, the airport turnoff, where the statue of Balinese inde-pendence hero I Gusti Ngurah Rai will need to be moved.

Governor Pastika said there would be additional traffic hold-ups for approx-imately a year, once flyover construction began. The government was looking at a number of ways to reduce disruption over that period, including a ferry service from Serangan to Tanjung Benoa.

He also said it was impractical to build a tunnel at Simpang Siur instead of an overpass because there was water only 1.5 metres below the surface in that area.

The provincial gover-nment wants the new flyover and associated road widening at the airport turnoff completed in time for an ASEAN summit meeting in Bali in 2013.
