Indonesia’s big birthday party is coming up – it’s on Tuesday, August 17 – and we’re all a-flutter, as this collection of national flags in a Legian laneway demonstrates. Every year around this time the Merah Putih (Red and White) is flown from businesses, private homes, and even in some very unlikely places such as roadside poles as a symbol of pride in the nation. This year is Indonesia’s 65th birthday, commemorating the declaration of the Republic of Indonesia by founding president Sukarno on August 17, 1945. The war for independence from the Dutch ended in 1949. (Photo: The Bali Times)
