Ketut Beratha, 62, is from Denpasar and works at a cargo company. He has two children and one grandchild.

What’s the greatest lesson life has taught you?
Life has taught me to help each other because we need each other.

What’s most important?
Health. Without your health you’re nothing. Imagine if we had a lot of money and power but we were not healthy. We couldn’t do anything.

What advice you would give the younger generations?
Respect each other, no matter what their religion is or where they come from.

Are you worried about dying?
Not at all because our life belongs to God. We start from him and everything ends upon him as well, so there’s nothing to be worried about.

When was the happiest time of your life?
When I was young. I could go wherever I wanted to and nobody asked me about what I did or where I went, like my family does now.

And the worst?
A few years ago when I became ill. I’m the head of my family, so things didn’t work that well and our income was very low.

What’s humanity all about?
Doing everything together like solving problems together so all the hard things will be much easier.

Why are there so many conflicts in the world?
Because people want to be powerful. Also because countries like America are greedy; they want oil or land.

Is a peaceful world possible?
I’m afraid it’s impossible. Even the United Nations, which is the most powerful body, cannot stop conflicts.

How old do you feel?
My age, 62.

Is one lifetime enough?
It is; it’s what God wants.

How has Bali changed?
Infrastructure has developed rapidly. Also, before, all the roofs on our houses were made from grass. Now they use different materials.

Has tourism been good for Bali?
It has been good because it has brought a better life for the local people. Also, youngsters can learn a lot from other countries.

What’s the major difference between the East and the West?
Foreigners are more sociable and friendly than local people.

Have you ever doubted your religion?
Never.

What makes you so sure of it?
Because every time I pray my soul feels peaceful.
