Sanur Sex Workers Held in Big Police Swoop
Police have arrested dozens of prostitutes, four of them underage, in raids in Sanur and in South Kuta conducted last weekend as part of Operation Supreme Concentration.
They also arrested a new brothel-keeper, named by police as Wayan Widana, 48, of Klungkung, who they said told them he had only just opened for business.
The four underage girls arrested by police in the Sanur raid came from Bogor, West Java. One was 15; the other three were 17. “They are victims. They were detained because they are underage,” South Denpasar Police chief Leo Pasaribu said.
Operation Supreme Concentration, an annual anti-crime sweep by Bali Police, had been under way for a week when the Sanur brothel operation was broken.
Brothel-keeper Widana is facing two prostitution related charges and one under the Child Protection Act. He was arrested at his newly opened brothel at Bungalow 505X, Jl Blanjong, Sanur, at 5pm on Monday.
Police went to the premises following surveillance information that the premises were used for prostitution.
Widana is alleged to have told police he had offered the girls from Bogor work as prostitutes in his brothel, saying he had found them at their homes in Bogor. “I went to Bogor and met them one by one,” he said. “I offered them offered work as a prostitute and they agreed. I invited them here on November 3 and they started work on November 5.”
Widana is alleged to have told police the prostitutes at his brothel charged Rp150,000 (US$17), of which the prostitute received Rp45,000 ($5). The rest of the money was allocated to rental of the premises and his own fee. He said he had rented the bungalow at 505X, Jl Blanjong, for a year at a rent of Rp8 million ($895).
South Kuta Police chief Nana Prihasmoko said this week his officers also raided premises last Sunday night in the same operation, arresting 10 prostitutes at two locations, Mt Lawu and Aseman.Filed under: Headlines
