Governor: Implement 1,000% Water Hike Now
Regents around Bali must immediately implement a controversial 1,000-percent rise in groundwater rates to be paid by businesses, Governor I Made Mangku Pastika has said.
Pastika, speaking in Renon on Friday, said regents must ensure the new rates are collected as it was not only a source of additional revenue for the island but also would help protect Bali’s fast-diminishing water tables.
Hotels and other tourism-related businesses have complained that they could face bankruptcy if the massive hike was implemented. But the governor sought to dispel such fears on Friday, saying they could “raise their room rates by US$5-10” to compensate.Filed under: Arts & Entertainment
