Drunk Truck Driver Kills Motorcyclist, Injures Three
The driver of a truck that ploughed into oncoming traffic, killing one motorcyclist and injuring three others, in Saba, Gianyar on February 14 evening, was drunk, police said.
The incident took place at 6.30pm on Jl IB Mantra. The truck, driven by a 35-year-old man identified as Oktavianus from Waingapu, Sumba, in East Nusa Tenggara, was unloaded at the time and was travelling west when it skewed across the road into the path of four oncoming motorbikes.
Thirty-one-year-old Surasih from Denpasar suffered severe head injuries in the crash and died later that evening at Sanglah Hospital. A Klungkung man, Widanta, 39, and 26-year-old Imam Ruspadi both suffered injuries to their legs, and a Blahbatuh woman suffered a broken shoulder.
Gianyar Police spokesman Rony Riantoko said that it was immediately obvious that the truck driver was drunk to officers who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident.
“Once we looked into the circumstances it turned out that the driver had been drinking alcohol in the Goa Lawah area of Klungkung shortly before the accident,” Riantoko said, adding that Oktavianus had been arrested and was being held at Gianyar Police headquarters.Filed under: Headlines
