Home-Brewed Alcohol Confiscated

Klungkung Police seized 175 litres of illegal home-brewed arak (rice liquor) when they pulled over a vehicle driven by a Karangasem man.

Officers conducting a pre-Nyepi sweep for illegal alcohol stopped the Denpasar-bound truck at lunchtime on February 12 as it was travelling along the main east coast highway through Klungkung regency.

“While we were doing our patrol we spotted the truck and thought there was something slightly suspicious about it,” a Klungkung Police spokesman said, adding that the seizure was part of an operation organised following reports of black-market arak sales in the regency.

The driver of the truck – identified as Nyoman Dendra from Dlod Yeh in Sideman, Karangasem – was arrested and seven large jerry cans of arak were seized. Police believe the brew was intended for distribution in Denpasar.

Illegally brewed arak has been the cause of dozens of deaths in Bali in recent years.
