Moderate Quake Shakes Bali, Lombok

DENPASAR

Bali got a light shaking early on Friday from an earthquake deep within the earth’s crust under the Bali Sea. The tremor lasted only a few seconds but was enough to wake many people when it hit at 1.08am.

It was felt more strongly in neighbouring Lombok but no damage was reported.

It measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes worldwide.

The epicentre was 261 kilometres northeast of Denpasar at a depth of 510 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii said there was no danger of a tsunami. “This earthquake is located too deep inside the Earth to generate a tsunami,” it said in a statement.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake under the sea just south of Nusa Dua in September 2009 caused some structural damage and injured several people in southern parts of the island.

The Thailand earthquake 24/3/11 makes me wonder if I could lose my entire family who are going to Bali 20/4/11 for 10 days.

Can I monitor the Japan/Thailand earthquake to see if it progresses in the direction of Bali?

    Good Morning,
We have just returned from Bali & were staying at the Outrigger at Legion/Seminyak. We were there from the 19/3/11 to 2/4/11. On our 2nd night, we were woken during the night to our glass onsuite door being shaken violently. My husband & I sat upright in our bed then realised our bed was shaking also. It was an earthquake tremor & we were told the next day that it was around a 6.
It frightenend us, but our teenage girls slept right through it & so did some of the other tourits we met. If it had not been for the glass door shaking that woke us up, we may have also slept through it. The locals just joked about it.

It would have been a worry if there was a tsunami there, as we were situated right on the beach.
