Dane Faces Life over Drug Smuggling

A Danish woman who was arrested in March at Ngurah Rai International Airport attempting to smuggle 218 grams of hashish into Bali went on trial at Denpasar District Court this week.

Tine Rasmussen, 37, faces life imprisonment.

Rasmussen was arrested on March 3 after arriving on a Thai Airlines flight from Bombay via Bangkok. She was found to have swallowed dozens of packages of hashish.

Her boyfriend, Cedric Laval, who was in Bali and had gone to the airport to collect her, was also arrested and will be tried separately.

The pair are understood to have been wanted by Interpol for drugs offenses.

Rasmussen told police she had bought the drugs from a man named Shiva in Vagator, India, for 10,534 rupees (US$237) before flying on to Bali.

Reading her indictment to the court on Tuesday, public prosecutor I Gede Raka Arimbawa said Rasmussen faced life imprisonment under Article 113 of Antinarcotics Law No 35 of 2009.

The trial will continue next week with testimony from witnesses.
