Film Festival Aims to Make Bali a Documentary Hub

DENPASAR

Organisers of the third Bali Documentary Film Festival, due to be held later this year, are hoping that the island can become a hub for film making in Indonesia.

The theme for the 2012 festival will be Women, Children and the Spirit of Unity in Diversity.

Speaking this week, Agung Bawantara, a member of the festival committee, said that this year the festival would be run independently, without funding from the provincial Culture Department. The main sponsor will be the Arti Foundation for Cultural Development, he said.

“This independence strengthens our position as a national-level competition. We are now free and open to express our ideas,” Bawantara said, adding that documentary submissions for the festival were due in by the start of June.

Indonesian actress and documentary-maker Marcella Zalianty has been appointed as the figurehead for the festival’s publicity.

“There are so many creative talents in other areas nationwide, outside Jakarta. We don’t need to do everything in Jakarta,” Zalianty said, adding that encouraging the creative industries in outlying parts of Indonesia, including Bali, was important.

“I support the effort to develop documentary film in all areas of the nation, not only Bali, so that we can promote the diversity of Indonesia’s nature and culture.” She said, adding that more work was needed to encourage the growth of documentary film-making in Indonesia, where it was often not taken seriously by TV channels.

“Bali has potential to be a hub for documentary filmmaking. Even Julia Roberts came to Bali, so why don’t we?” she said.
