Forecasts for week beginning February 4, 2011.

By Jonathan Cainer

Every so often, experts add an extra second to the day to ensure our time-keeping system stays accurate. I’m always amused by this. It makes me want to ask ‘what do you intend to do with your extra blink?’ Anyway, all our days are 3 minutes, 56 seconds too long. The 24-hour clock gives only a clumsy approximation of the Earth’s actual rotation. Those minutes soon add up. That’s partly why we have leap years. This week’s powerful Full Moon may yet cause us all to feel as if a little more time might be very useful indeed.

ARIES (March 21 – April 20)
It somehow seems as if, in life, we pay a price for everything. It doesn’t necessarily follow, though, that we will gain any more, the more something costs us. Some things are worth going the extra mile for and some things are not. This profound philosophical conundrum brings us neatly on to your current question. You don’t know how far to go down a particular road. You fear that you may be in the process of making a poor choice or a dubious deal. There undoubtedly is a tricky trade-off – but it is one that you can, eventually, only benefit from. Be brave.

TAURUS (April 21 – May 21)
You now appear to be looking for some rhyme and reason? What do you think this world is – a poetry convention? A gathering of mathematicians? This is Planet Earth; a big ball of molten rock spinning in space on which all life forms are only temporary. Billions visit. None stay. All return to other worlds. But what do they seek while they are here? They come, surely, for the chaos, craziness and drama – not for the logic or for the common sense of it all. This week won’t bring much of an explanation to your biggest mystery, but it may yet bring you deep joy.

GEMINI (May 22 – June 22)
No news is good news. You keenly hope that a certain situation will stay the same. You are trying to keep something as it is – to maintain a status quo or to preserve a precarious but potentially profitable arrangement. You are keeping your fingers (and your toes) crossed. If things hold just about steady – if you can only manage to prevent some new development from creating further upheaval – all will be fine. Will there be a big, dramatic development this week? Not unless that’s what you want. You have the power to establish and sustain stability.

CANCER (June 23 – July 23)
What are you supposed to say? What are you supposed to do? It is not easy to look at your current situation and feel sure that you can see where the rights and the wrongs of it all are. You do not fully understand a certain person’s point of view. You know that you have an opportunity, but you feel nervous about taking it – for you suspect that the consequences are likely to be very far-reaching. What if, in your effort to get things right, you get things wrong? This concern is understandable, but irrelevant. If you do your best it will be good enough.

LEO (July 24 – August 23)
There’s nothing wrong with caring about the future. We are entitled to plan, to dream and to live in hope of better days to come. If this comforts us and enables us to find strength in trying circumstances, where can be the harm in it? Nowhere, other perhaps than in the danger of becoming over-anaesthetised. If all our thoughts are wrapped up in tomorrow, we may miss chances to improve our experience of today. Never mind what’s going to happen one day, there’s something happening this week that is good. Relax and appreciate it.

VIRGO (August 24 – September 23)
Trees do not seek planning permission before they take root. Birds do not clear a flight-path before they take off. Rain does not request a licence before falling. It’s amazing how many natural processes can manage to occur without the intervention of the appropriate authorities. No doubt, in time, governments will find some way to regulate them. Meanwhile, it is nice to know that in a world of conformity and regimentation, there is still some scope for spontaneity. Are you doing the right thing now? That depends on whom you ask. So ask yourself.

LIBRA (September 24 – October 23)
When we are happy, when we feel good, we say, ‘everything is as it should be’. We do not question our lot in life or resent our role in an unfolding drama. We are glad enough to accept the world just as it is. When we feel bad, our doubts and misgivings flood into our lives like the tide from a shattered damn. Urgently, we start to seek the reason for our discomfort. But sometimes it can be right to feel wrong, good to feel bad, appropriate to feel that something is inappropriate. A necessary drama is now being acted out. Soon, there will be a helpful change.

SCORPIO (October 24 – November 22)
A compromise is called for this week. I’m sorry to have to say that. I could, I suppose dedicate the rest of this forecast to a homily for unilateralism. I could encourage you to plough on regardless. It is entirely possible that if you refused to negotiate, you would get a surprisingly long way. But not as far as you would need to go. As I began by saying, a compromise is called for. Not a sacrifice. Not an act of martyrdom. Just a willingness to take a less extreme position in response to the conciliatory gesture that someone is about to make. Be graceful.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 – December 21)
When the wind is blowing and the rain is falling, our first priority must be to find shelter. Later, by the side of a fire in a cosy cabin, we can wonder why the weather turned so bad. We can mentally retrace our steps and ask ourselves whether there might have been a wiser route to follow. Analysis is a luxury that people in intense and demanding situations can never fully afford. In one area of your life, at least, there is a storm raging now. Just get out of its way. Aim instead to put yourself where there is safety and where there will soon be sunshine.

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 20)
Every so often we all do dumb things. We make crazy moves. We reach daft decisions. It is the way we are. It cannot be helped. Do you know what is silliest of all? It is when we do something generous, timely and appropriate and then start deciding that it must have been a mistake! Too often, we applaud ourselves for acts of inanity whilst apologising about acts of humanity. Trust your kindest, most forgiving instincts now. They won’t make you look tough but they will help you to feel good. And through feeling good, you will make the wisest choices.

AQUARIUS (January 21 – February 19)
Sometimes, when we are trying to talk to someone, we realise that they are just not listening. We say, in exasperation, ‘I might as well just be talking to myself.’ But if you were really just talking to yourself, how honest would you be? Are there things that you really ought to say, yet fear you are not ready to hear? And if you feel that there aren’t, are you sure about this? If one part of you now can’t accept what another part of you feels or believes, how can you hope for true communication with a third party? If you listen to your heart this week, others will listen to you.

PISCES (February 20 – March 20)
If you look at anything with a critical eye, you can soon find fault with it. If we listen to anyone with a sceptical ear, we can soon find a reason to mistrust them. Negativity is contagious. People inadvertently pass it on to one another through their deeds and their attitudes. Even those who enjoy a nutritious diet of cheerfulness and faith and thus build up immunity to the virus of doubt, can still succumb in a moment of weakness. Be careful about what you expose yourself to this week. Pessimism is neither good for you, nor appropriate at the moment.
