Dutchman With Cocaine in Stomach Arrested in Jakarta

AIRPORT ARREST: A Dutchman has been arrested in the capital over drugs.

A Dutchman faces a possible death penalty after he was caught at Jakarta’s international airport with more than $100,000 worth of cocaine stashed in his stomach, an official said on Tuesday.

Customs officials who arrested the unidentified man at the Soekarno-Hatta airport in the Indonesian capital said he had flown in from Bangkok at around noon on Friday.

“We arrested a man from the Netherlands carrying 205 grammes of cocaine in large capsules in his stomach,” a customs spokesman said.

“We conducted an X-ray and saw the capsules. We… found they contained a white powder. We tested it and confirmed it was cocaine,” he said.

The cocaine has a street value of Rp1 billion rupiah (US$109,000), according to customs.

Under Indonesia’s strict narcotics laws, carrying more than five grammes of cocaine is punishable by death, although the death sentence is rarely given for small amounts.

Also on Tuesday, Greek national Nikolaos Bouikidis, 36, was sentenced to 18 years in jail by the Denpasar District Court for trying to smuggle 4.2 kilos of crystal methamphetamine into the resort island of Bali last year.

The drugs were valued at $1.2 million and prosecutors had sought a life sentence for him.
