World Awaits Bali Bombing Mastermind Verdict

There was heavy security around the West Jakarta District Court on Thursday.


A verdict is due shortly in the terrorism trial of Umar Patek, accused of masterminding the 2002 bombings in Bali that claimed the lives of 202 people, many of them foreign tourists.

The so-called “Demolition Man” is also accused of involvement in church bombings in Jakarta in 2000 that killed 19 people.

There is heavy security around the West Jakarta District Court, with around 300 police officers guarding the courtroom and snipers on the roofs of nearby high-rise buildings.

Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for Patek, 45. The court convened early on Thursday and was continuing though the afternoon.

Three leading Islamic militants were put to death in 2008 for their roles in the 2002 nightclub blasts in Bali.
