How to Ensure Your Home Is Happy and Healthy

By S.BS. Surendran

Feng shui design architecture is the art of using the space in your home or office effectively in order to attract and keep the energy (chi) in control and balance. Feng shui interior decoration encompasses the golden and practical rules of housekeeping as well as feng shui beliefs.

As we continually interact with our personal space, it has a profound influence on the quality of our lives, both on a conscious and subconscious level. It is a mirror of who you are and your life circumstances. The internal environment in which we live plays an integral part in creating the external aspects and aspirations in our lives. You regenerate yourself if your internal environment is a place of balance and harmony that nurtures your feelings of inspiration, security and peace. As with our human bodies the healthier the bodies of our buildings are, the more they empower and support us in living a rich, creative and joyful existence.

Feng shui is largely a matter of arranging the flow of energy in a space – not for aesthetics alone, but, more importantly, so that the space serves a particular function or set of functions that are critical to your success and wellbeing. Whether you are constructing a new home, office or factory or renovating or remodelling it, positioning rooms and the occupants in accordance with laws of vaastu and feng shui ensures long-term prosperity. A feng shui consultant is useful during construction or renovation as they can identify the lucky and unlucky areas and fine-tune your space to be in synchronicity with the occupants.

One of the primary concepts of feng shui interior design is flow of energy. Chi-enriched and balanced environments attract all kinds of benefits and positive opportunities. The chi that moves through the spaces where you live or work is of vital importance to your health, prosperity, relationships and many other areas of your life. Balancing and enhancing your environment brings these benefits to manifest the goals and dreams for a better future.

In adapting feng shui interior design, it’s quite easy to direct, retain and channel this energy in a way that is most beneficial to the occupants of the room. This can be done through auspicious room layouts, décor or by the placement of objects at different compass locations; or by using furniture made of specific types of material.

Arranging furniture is merely a part of interior design, while actually creating flow and energy is a greater task that demands accuracy, expertise and insight. Whether your home is a century old or still in the initial stages of planning, feng shui can help positive transformation take place and one can experience the changes over a period of time. However, the basic requirements for proper flow of energy are:
• De-clutter your space as clutter and mess is anathema to the rules of feng shui interior decorating. A messy home or office can block and ward off positive chi;
• Plants can be used to good advantage in home decoration as they cleanse the air and signify growth;
• Avoid sharp-cornered objects and excessive overhead lights focused downwards; up-lit lights are more harmonious;

Directions are extremely important when it comes to feng shui design and layout. Hence, the other important analysis would be to observe your land on which your building stands, and the external influences. The levels of the property and the surroundings have a significant impact on the type of energy moving in and out of your building.

The general precautions one should take are:
• Plan a home that’s square or rectangular. Odd-shaped or angular buildings have feng shui challenges that are difficult to undo;
• Make the building generally symmetrical in shape, and avoid angular protrusions;
• Include a foyer in the floor plan. Don’t have the front door open directly into a room (where the chi would be permitted to escape);
• Avoid floor-to-ceiling windows in bedrooms; this lets too much chi escape and also warms up the room;
• Choose smooth surfaces for interior walls as curved walls and surfaces also encourage positive flow of chi;

While observing the immediate surroundings, also look for external afflictions like electric pylons; overhead electricity lines in close proximity; trees focusing towards the property main door; designing of the garden; placement of plants; water features; and the ill effects of neighbouring buildings.

These observations can ensure that preventative measures can be taken to avoid bad effects and ensure turn your property is charged with good energy flow and is vibrant and in harmony with the occupants.
