Suspected Car-Breaker Detained in East Java
A Bali Police team has arrested a suspected smash-and-grab thief at his home in Gresik, East Java.
The team had tracked Akri Hohakai, who is thought to be behind a string of thefts from cars in Denpasar, to Java, according to Bali Police spokesman Haryadi.
Hariyadi said that Hohakai was arrested on Tuesday at his family home in Gresik, close to the East Java capital of Surabaya. He said that officers from both the provincial police force and the Denpasar force had taken part in the operation.
“We had been watching the suspect along with Denpasar Police very carefully for about a week, because he was a very alert suspect,” he said.
Hariyadi said that when police moved to arrest the 29-year-old, he attempted to flee, and was shot in the foot to halt his escape.
He said that Hohakai was believed to have come to Bali with two other men and targeted a number of parked cars in Denpasar, smashing the windshields to get at valuables inside.
He had previously been arrested for similar crimes in the Nganjuk area of East Java.
Hohakai’s associates, identified as SL from Makassar, Sulawesi, and ANK from Malang, East Java, have yet to be arrested.
Hariyadi said that officers from Bali were coordinating with their colleagues from East Java, as the three men were also thought to be behind similar crimes in Malang, Jember and Surabaya.
