Alleged Killers Face Death in Family Murder Trial

A group who killed a family in Jimbaran in February are facing a possible death penalty at Denpasar District Court.

Heru Hedriyanto, 25, is facing trial for the murder of his former employer, 28-year-old Purnabawa, his wife, Ni Luh Ayu Sri Mahayoni, and their daughter, Ni Wayan Risna Ayu Dewi.

The bodies of the trio were found in a roadside ravine in Jembrana on February 20.

It is alleged that Hedriyanto, who worked for the family as a driver and lived in their home in Jembrana, had murdered them in league with his own wife, 21-year-old Putu Anita Sukra Dewi, and several other men, including Abdul Kodir, 36; Safa’at, 32; and Sugiono, 21. Two other men are still on the run.

During a court hearing on Monday, prosecutors demanded the death penalty for all five people standing trial.

“There is no adequate punishment but death,” said prosecutor I Wayan Widana.

According to the prosecutors, Hedriyanto killed his employers because he disliked the way they treated him. After killing them in their home, he and his accomplices disposed of the bodies in Jembrana and sold their car and motorbike to pay the other men between Rp10 million and Rp20 million for their help, it is alleged.

The trial continues next week.
