Drought doesn’t Affect Food Sustainability

DENPASAR

Head of Bali Provincial Department of Agriculture and Foodstuffs, Ida Bagus Wisnuardhana said drought do not threaten food sustainability in Paradise island.

“Based on data of drought from period of June to September 2012, the drought impact on 400 hectares rice fields in Bali. From the figure, 140 hectares are experiencing total failure or parched,” he said in Denpasar.

According to him the amount of the total failure or parched was not so large compared to the rice planting area in Bali.

The dry parched land, he added, is spread across 19 subak in five sub districts namely Jembrana, Buleleng, Tabanan, Klungkung, and Badung. He added that the amount of loss is predicted around 812 tons of ground dry rice grains.

“While the total area of rice fields in Bali around 81 thousand hectares more. Accordingly, farmers planted an average of two times a year so the overall acreage of rice in our area ranges over 162 thousand hectares,” he said.

For farmers who have dry parched land, the institute has also filed compensation program through puso rice control program to the Ministry of Agriculture.

“With the compensation funds that will be given amounting to Rp2, 7 million per hectare, farmers are expected to plant rice again in the period of November to March,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bali this year expects to produce 850 thousand tons of ground dry rice grains equivalent of 500 thousand rice.

“In essence, the drought doesn’t affect the food sustainability in Bali. In addition, many other foods beyond rice available in the community,” he said.

Food sustainability, in addition to be reached by efforts of production improvement, he added, plus through food diversification.
